Land and Sea
“Land and Sea” is a body of work exploring the concept of capturing a place. Through weather, seasons and landscapes this project attempts to capture an atmospheric abstract of our northernmost islands. Taking influence from my Shetland heritage this project is inspired by the environment and traditional designs of Shetland. Attempting to embed the atmosphere of the islands into the material and imagery of the pieces created, to create textiles that are contemporary but with a strong influence from tradition.
Dip dye techniques are used to create subtle colour gradients, gradation through colour change is then enhanced with knitted textures and brushing. The textures created are tactile and pleasing to the touch. Throughout the design process there has been a strong focus on outdoor surroundings and landscapes. Taking inspiration from the pattern and movement of land and seascapes, the sea with its fascinating movement and the land with its ever evolving seasons. The knitted designs developed from this are intended to have a sense of place and character.
This work will be made into wearable accessories, to warm, wrap, swathe and comfort the wearer. Creating a modern fashion piece that is visually interesting, comfortable and functional.
